Reflective tape is structurally different from regular rolls of vinyl tape. Not only is reflective tape more durable than regular vinyl tape rolls, but it is also used for heavy-duty outdoor applications. To install reflective tape, especially on a car, truck, or motorcycle, you can easily install reflective tape by moistening it with 1 cup of water and 6-8 drops of soapy water of Palmolive or Joy dishwashing detergent.

Spray the solution on the vehicle and on the adhesive side of the reflective tape (don’t worry, Streetglo reflective tape will bond correctly even with this soapy water). The wet solution allows for repositioning and allows you to remove and retry the application, thus extending the working time. We recommend that prolonged applications (such as the side of a car or truck) should be done in a single, short application. Reflective tape stretches easily, so short applications will reduce stretching.

How to install reflective tape and reflective pinstripes

While WEALLIGHT specializes in reflective pinstripes and reflective bands, the bulk of this tutorial will also apply to the installation of common garden variant stripes. It should be noted, however, that reflective pinstripes and reflective tape typically have much lower stretching tolerances. While you can stretch and bend plain pinstripes during installation, all stretching should be minimized when using reflective materials. If overstretched, most reflective materials will begin to break down within a few weeks of installation.

There are several rules for installing any type of reflective tape, pinstripe, or reflective pinstripe. First, make sure your vehicle is clean and free of dirt, tar, and other contaminants. Even after a thorough cleaning, you will often run along the surface and still feel what I call “tar pimples”, which can ruin the final look of your custom pinstripe job. Use an auto parts store’s tar removal solvent to clean up any tar pimples that may remain after cleaning.

Next, clean your hands! Body oils and dirt deep in your fingerprints can cause adhesion issues (you don’t want the ends of the pinstripes to flip up, right?).

There are several ways to install pinstripes. I happen to like the program I use and this is the same program I would recommend. It’s called “markers, tugs, and taps”. With this system, you will have nearly perfect lines (for those that are straight). For those pinstripe lines that are going to be curved, the same system can be used, but you can also combine them by doing some hand-drawn pinstripe work to get a nicely curved pinstripe line.

Let us now examine the straight pinstripe:

Let’s assume that you want to install a pinstripe line underneath the door trim of a typical car. Select the start and endpoints of the line. Place a small piece of tape at each end of the final start and end of the pinstripe. Now for the fun and easy part….. Attach (STICK) the pinstripe at your starting point and make sure it is flush with the line you want to run. In fact, you should start over behind the starting point, as the next step will ensure the line is perfect. Next, pull back on the wax liner and (TUG) tape, applying only enough tension to pull the line straight as you slowly begin to attach the other end to the other Mark on the front of the sedan. (Note: Reflective tape stretches easily. Do not attempt to use the full length of the car or truck in one application. (Divide it into sections and do not overstretch it or it will crack from age and sun exposure) . This TUG action will create a perfectly straight line. As you hover the mouse about 1-2 inches above the marker, as you gradually move towards the marker, you will see the pinstripe tape start to adhere from the starting point and pull the body up towards the end as you continue to lower it. This is due to the slight bend in the body of most cars. When you lower it, the tape makes contact with the curved bodywork. At this point, the tape is barely stuck, so you have the option of reinstalling the lift and trying again and again. You can make straight lines by simply performing this process. Curves are a simple variation of this process. As with straight lines, in curves, you simply lower or raise the working point and you slowly lower the tape or pinstripes onto the body. Using this method is a sure way to get perfectly straight or perfectly geometric curves. Once the pinstripe or reflective tape is lowered, and only once you are sure of the result, lower the tape gently (TAP) with your fingertips. Don’t try to brush it off or it will move!

Please note the following:

If you have never installed reflective pinstripes, reflective tape, or regular pinstripes before, please practice with “CHEAP” discount roll tape first. Do not try to use expensive reflective pinstripes for the first installation.

If using any brand of reflective material, such as reflective tape or reflective pinstripes, minimize the TUG so that it does not exceed the force required to straighten the line. If a very long strip is to be installed, install it at a half or quarter distance so that the line does not sag. Reflective strips or reflective pinstripes feel a lot like regular vinyl pinstripes, but with a different chemical composition. Most brands will begin to break down after a few weeks and it is not very attractive to perform pinstripe stripping.

Reflective stripes on motorcycles are easy! It can easily save your life at night. There is no single reason why it is not there. The reflective pinstripe tape will help other motorists see you and prevent them from hitting you. Let’s face it, even looking at it, motorcycles are hard to see. You need to make some visual noise and reflective pinstripe and other reflective materials are a great first step.

Reflective pinstripes tape on cars, trucks, or boats! Still, it makes sense. First of all, it looks very, very cool! Just like any other high-quality pinstripe, you can’t say too much today. But at night, your vehicle becomes the star of the road with its bright, reflective pinstripes.

There is nothing safer than equipping motorcycles with reflective tape in the fuel tank, on the frame, and with the motorcycle’s pinstripe on the fenders and roof. Try using black on black reflective tape to make it invisible during the day but reflective at night. The reflective tape mounted under the fuel tank is not visible during the day.

Reflective pinstripe tape in small boats. As with motorcycles, this can save your life. Anchoring in the river is especially important. Even minimal running lights from another boat nearby can make your boat visible. On boats, it is recommended to use larger reflective tape, such as 3 / 4, 1, or 2″ reflective tape.
