Product Description of ASTM Type 4 Reflective Sign Sheeting

For nearly all traffic signs on public roadways in the United States, the faces of these signs are covered with a thin plastic material known as retroreflective sheeting. This material is designed to show a bright and uniform color and to reflect light back to a viewer’s eyes so as to be visible in both daylight and darkness. If properly applied and sealed to a good surface, nearly all retroreflective sheetings are water, ice, and salt resistant and durable under normal outdoor conditions. To provide color, the sheeting either has colored pigments built into or applied to the material or has a translucent colored overlay film.

The types used in the ASTM D4956 specifications do not necessarily imply relative performance; i.e. a “higher”-type sheeting isn’t necessarily better than a “lower”-type sheeting – it just meets different performance characteristics. Also, note that some sheetings on the market can meet the criteria of several ASTM types.

Type IV Reflective Sheeting Trade Names: High Intensity Prismatic Sheeting or Microprismatic Grade Vinyl. This is also a multi-layer sheeting, except that the reflective layer is made of microscopic cube-corner reflectors instead of glass beads – known as a “microprismatic” layer. This sheeting can be distinguished by a pattern of small squares or bars superimposed upon the lattice grid. Generally regarded to have a 7-10 year service life.

Feature Of Type IV Reflective Sheeting

Type IV Reflective Sheeting is non-metalized reflective sheeting which is coated with resin enclosed lens of high retro-reflectivity microscopic corner cube reflectors and coated a pressure-sensitive adhesive with an easy operating release liner, manufactured with the technology of micro grade precision coating and can reflect backward incident lights. It is weatherproof, self-adhesive films with excellent corrosion and solvent resistance. The smooth surface allows a very good printability. The retro-reflective system consists of sealed cells of air backed micro prisms, using total internal reflection. The distinct shape of the sealing identifies the machine direction.

Type 4 Prismatic Reflective Sheeting may be processed into traffic signs by any of the imaging methods described below. Customers should test each application before mass production.

Plotter Cutting

Programmable knife cut (electronic cutting)

• Flatbed plotters can either die cut or kiss cut and offer the most consistent reliable performance.
• Friction Fed plotter. Kiss-cut only. Success has been achieved using plotters that have 600 grams of downforce and a 60° cutting blade. Additional drive wheels may need to be added to improve tracking. An alternative procedure is to cut sheeting from the liner side. Blade force and knife depth must be set to score but not cut through the top film. Break apart individual copy or apply premask to retain spacing.

Other Cutting Methods: WEALLIGHT Prismatic Reflective Sheeting may be hand cut or die cut one sheet at a time, and band sawed or guillotined in stacks. Cutting equipment such as guillotines and metal shears, which have pressure plates on the sheeting when cutting, may damage the optics. Padding the pressure plate and easing it down onto the sheets being cut will significantly reduce damage. Maximum stack height for cutting reflective sheeting is 1 ½ inch or 50 sheets.

Cutting: WEALLIGHT Prismatic Reflective Sheeting may be cut into letters and shapes of at least 3 inches in height and stroke widths of at least 1/2 inch. Smaller sizes are not recommended. Sealing cut edges of Reflective Sheeting is NOT required.
