This is a retroreflective material which increases the detection range of lifesaving devices marked with this material by 8-10 times compared with unmarked equipment. Our SOLAS Marine Grade Reflective Tape conforms to Marine Equipment Directive 96/98/EC and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Resolution A.658(16) Annex 2. It is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to meet 46 CFR part 164, Subpart 164.018 for Type I and II retroreflective material used to enhance the visibility of life-saving equipment in the nighttime, or low-light conditions.

High Intensity Grade SOLAS Reflective Tape was designed for applications onto life-saving devices such as life vests, jackets, and rafts in a maritime context. The aggressive pressure-sensitive adhesive guarantees a strong bonding to various materials (aluminum, glass reinforced polyester (GRP), rubber, vinyl/PVC, polyurethane).

SOLAS is a Coast Guard designation and stands for “Safety Of Life At Sea”. SOLAS tape is used in marine environments to assist search and rescue operations. The tape is applied to pleasure craft, sailboats, lifeboats, life rafts, life jackets, life rings, and other objects so that they can be spotted in the water by rescue personnel.

The main difference between SOLAS and other reflective tapes is brightness. SOLAS has a candela rating of over 1000. Standard engineer grade sheeting like you would see on a car tag is about 75. This extreme reflectivity allows the tape to be seen for thousands of feet instead of hundreds. In search and rescue operations, the extreme reflectivity that SOLAS tape offers can mean the difference between life and death. The second difference is adhesive strength. SOLAS has 5 mils of aggressive adhesive versus 2.5 for other films. This extra adhesive comes in handy when the tape is applied to a non-standard surface such as wood or pitted metal.

Application Of USCG Coast Guard Marine Reflective Tape

SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) is intended for life support equipment such as life vests, jackets, and rafts. Strong reflection effect help to identify the vehicle type and size, avoid the occurrence of accidents, improve safety. Popular with drivers, hikers, bikers, and daily joggers. bicycles, trucks, trailers, boats, mailboxes, RV’s and camper/hiker’s backpack or helmet.

Outerwear: The fabric to be adhered to must be clean, dry, and substantially free of contamination. If necessary, wipe the substrate surface with a mild solvent, such as mineral spirits (Test the solvent first on a small area of the fabric.

Substrates/Equipment: glass reinforced polyester, rubber film, PVC films, aluminum, and polyurethane films (varies with treatment).

Whenever possible, remove flotation material or deflate equipment, and smooth out wrinkles clean the substrate surface and make sure the item to be adhered to is clean, dry, and free of contamination.

• 1. Cut the reflective material to the proper size.
• 2. Separate approximately 25mm of liner paper from reflective material. Bend liner back onto itself.
• 3. When everything is properly aligned, press down the exposed adhesive area by using a squeegee starting from the inside and working towards the end.
• 4. Slowly remove the rest of the liner as the squeegee application is made, keeping material away from fabric/ equipment until pressure is applied. Squeegee down the entire reflective area in this manner.
• 5. On all vinyl applications, use talcum powder around edges after material application to prevent tackiness.

It is recommended, to achieve maximum adhesion, to allow up to 48 hours (above 60 °F) before handling, inflating, or packaging.

NOTE: Some plastics contain release agents, monomers, plasticizers, dyes, oils, gasses, and other constituents and should be evaluated before application.

• 1. Please clean and dust the surface before application
• 2. It would be the best to cut a short strip and try it out on the surface first to know if it will adhere well
• 3. To check out the effect of reflecting, please turn on your flashlight, keep a certain distance from the reflective tape and swing the flashlight up and down (or swing it right and left)
