Reflective Tape Types

According to the structure, reflective tape can be divided into glass beads and micro-prism type reflective tape.

• Glass bead reflective tape is more affordable, has lower reflectivity, and reflects light back to a larger angle. This type of reflection can be seen at more angles over a shorter distance and a larger area of the tape is “illuminated” by the light source. The result is more of a “near light” effect, which works well at close range. The light reflected by the glass beads dissipates at a distance and loses its intense glow after a few hundred feet.
• Prismatic Reflections Prismatic reflections can be seen at great distances and can be seen from a quarter to a half-mile away.

Glass Bead Reflective Tape

The retro-reflective tape using glass bead technology consists of a layer of microscopic glass spheres. Light enters the sphere and is reflected back to the light source. Changes in the shape of the glass beads and the coating cause some of the reflected light to be reflected at different angles and only some of the light is reflected back in the true retro-reflective direction. An efficiency of about 30% is normal.

Refraction of Light

Light hitting a glass bead is refracted and reflected. Refraction is the bending of light, similar to the illusion of bending a pencil when it is dipped in a glass of water. How Glass Beads Retroreflect Light

Glass Bead Reflective Sheeting Tape

The two most common types of glass bead reflective tape are type 1 and type 3.

By reflecting a concentrated beam from precise angles, the reflected light can travel much further distance before being dispersed.

What Is DOT C2 Reflective Tape?

DOT C2 Reflective Tape is a reflective tape with alternating white and red patterns that meets minimum reflective standards. It must be 2″ wide and must bear the DOT C2 marking. Two patterns are accepted and you can use either 6/6 (6″ red and 6″ white) or 7/11 (7″ white and 11″ red).

On December 10, 1992, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a final rule requiring that trailers manufactured on or after December 1, 1993, have an overall width of 80 inches or greater and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds on the sides and rear (pole trailers and those designed for living or office use) (except for trailers) and to make them more visible on the road.NHTSA regulations allow trailer manufacturers to install red and white retro reflective tape or reflectors. This tape is commonly referred to as DOT C2 reflective tape and is therefore marked for easy identification.

ECE 104 Reflective Tape – What Is ECE 104?

ECE104 is a regulation that establishes guidelines for the use of retro-reflective safety markings on heavy goods vehicles operating throughout Europe.

Since July 2011, all newly registered HGVs over 7.5 tonnes and trailers over 3.5 tonnes operating in the UK, are required by law to be fitted with homologated retro-reflective markings tape. These must clearly outline the rear and sides of the vehicle to make it visible for up to 1000 meters in low light conditions. ECE104 specifies the standard for the reflective materials used and where and how it must be positioned on the vehicle or trailer.

Vehicle Safety Markings required under ECE104 must carry the “E-mark” to show that the tape has met the minimum requirements of the regulation. The markings need to be between 50mm to 60mm.

SOLAS Reflective Tape

SASO 2913 is the Saudi Arabian standard for reflective tape. SASO is the competent authority for all matters relating to standardization, metrology, and quality in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It provides the necessary measures for the quality control of raw materials and products and sets up the necessary conformity procedures for products in accordance with quality verification, legislation, and the application of quality mark schemes. It manages the organization and execution of tasks related to standards, metrology, and quality, including the development of standards for Saudi goods, products and services, measurement, and the development of conformity assessment and certification procedures, and hosts the Saudi Accreditation Committee (SAC), which accredits laboratories and certification bodies. In addition, SASO establishes methods for sampling, testing, and technical inspection, and promotes a quality management system.

NTC 5807 Reflective Tape

NTC 5807 Reflective Tape is the regulation for the use of reflective tape in Columbia. Resolution No. 3246 of August 3, 2018, set the maximum deadline for the implementation of reflective tape at November 4, 2018, but Resolution No. 4919 was issued on October 25, 2018, extending the deadline for an additional six months, i.e., beginning May 4, 2019, and will impose fines for non-compliant vehicles.
